The Criterion Collection

Tumblr Tuesday #3

If you’ve never heard of the Criterion Collection then this weeks single serving Tumblr is a bit of a two for one special. Setup in 1984, Criterion has endeavored to collect contemporary greats and proven classics of cinema. They offer them to us with the highest technical quality while packaged with the most insightful and award winning extras be it commentaries or behind the scenes documentaries. From the outset a Criterion DVD or Blu-Ray is something special to behold, with unique poster work that is sorely missing from mainstream cinema on a whole. But buyer beware. You’ll need a well stocked wallet before exploring the main Criterion website, as these beauties don’t come cheap.

Among the many extra features Criterion run on their site they’ve created a blog to supplement the whole lot. The casual viewer will be treated to a stream of consistently beautiful and intriguing cinematic images which includes a great run of Kindergarten Cop April’s Fool photographs. But let the intrigue grow just a little bit, have just one little thought of “Hmmm. I wonder what that’s from?” and you’re one click away from a page detailing all the film’s tech specs, bonus material, pretty packaging and add to basket button. Make sure your self-restraint is set to max.

BONUS: If you’re as smitten by the Criterion covers as me, then you’ll enjoy a gander at Fake Criterions. No explanation needed.
